About Kagami Biraki:
Kagami Biraki, which means literally “Mirror Opening,” is a ceremony that dates back over 300 years to the 4th Tokugawa Shogun, who held a Sake cask breaking ceremony before going into a battle. The battle was successful and a tradition was born. It is also a New Year tradition in which Kagami Biraki refers to the opening of a Kagami mochi, the mochi rice cakes placed on Shinto alters as offerings. Martial Arts dojo traditionally also perform a demonstration as an offering.
